also one other item...what is the best way to get new screws and hardware? do they have to all be ordered or can they be matched at a store locally?

Quick update...I bought an impact driver and after some wd40 on the screw I was able to get it loose and open up the points. I'm glad I did not have to use the Dremel but thanks for the advice. To be honest I was confused by the tuning recipe and how to procede with getting them set correctly. I could use a step by step with a diagram I must admit I am lost in this area. But I had cleaned and replaced the carbs and my brother and I synched them as best we could by sighting them in and they both moved at the same time.

After hooking up the tubes to the petcock, we decided it was time to finally put in some gas and start it up (with a newly charged battery as well). And what do you know it fired up on the first go! The sound is great but we had trouble getting it to idle well and kept losing it. It ran fine but we could not get it to idle at 1000. Not sure if it is the points or an air carb issue? Unfortunately it was pouring today and I could not take it for a test spin but at least it is running! I included a link below for the sound of the engine...Listen to the sound at the end...is that a bad sound? I only heard it twice all day but it sounded bad.

Also mine paper is ruined on my air filters but I was thinking of taking the paper off and covering the mesh with UNI filter foam. Any experience with this? Thanks for the help all.

So I got back into the points yesterday and I think I have them decently adjusted. After the initial cold start it turns over on the 2nd or 3rd kick dependably now. However I cannot get the bike to idle. It sounds great and there is good pressure out of both exhausts, but as soon as I let off the gas and attempt to idle the bike, it goes down to around 1000 rpms and dies every time. I am not sure how best to go about adjusting the carbs for the right idle. I have seen many articles discussing air screw and carb slide adjusters but I was curious if there is also an idle screw? Ultimately I just need guidance.

I included a diagram to help explain. If anyone could steer me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. The carb slides move up and down at the same time I got that part set from Ed's instructions but I could not get the idle. Thanks for taking the time all that have helped thus far.

You have the air screw and the idle screw flip-flopped. The idle screw is in line with the slide. It holds the slide up just a bit to keep the bike idling.

Long time no post. So I indeed had the idle and air screws mixed. When I readjusted them I got the bike idling decently, at least enough to take it out for a maiden ride. The tires were low so I set off for the nearest filling station for air. Of course I nearly made it when the back tire got a flat. I had to have the bike towed to a shop to change it and they are looking over the bike to make sure it is safe to ride. The shifting was decent but the throttle was a little sticky and jumped around some. Although I must say it was the best ride! What an excellent bike that is!

I was curious on input from folks who have attempted to shape their own seat and reupholster it. I would like to re-do my seat myself but I am curious on what has worked well for others. Thanks and I will be updating next week when I get the bike back.
