Stator cover screws CA77... what thread are these things?...

Post by rzgkane » Sun Mar 18, 2012 1:19 pm

I bought new stator cover screws from HONDA that the fiche identified as 5 x 16. Well, they don't fit into the late style right cover I just installed. Bill Silver's materials say the cover calls for 5 x 16 screws but the ones I took out are not 5 x 16 and do not match up to anything I could find at ACE Hardware. Any ideas? Pic below. Current on left and ill-fitting newbie on the right. Thread pitch seems more coarse in the current screw.

The thread pitch changed for 3, 4, 5, and 12 mm sizes in 1967, so new won't work.
You will need to find original jis thread pitch screws.
I think Fast Fred had some at one time...might check with him.

I was afraid you'd say that. Where might I find this Fast Fred character? Down by the pier?

Or I guess I could just retap to ISO M5 x .8.

Well, it may not please the purists but I retapped mine for SAE thread and bought some stainless steel screws from a marine supply store. They polish up beautifully and look great. Sure easier and cheaper than finding JIS threads. I did the same for the points cover. Seems like every one you buy has chewed up heads on those two covers. Just my opinion....

That's plan B. I'll probably just buy the ones on ebay (3 for $20) and call it a deal. You win some, you lose some.
