Cutting out the Starter Solenoid altogether??

Post by hillhudson » Mon Feb 27, 2012 2:44 am

Hey all, so my question is... why can't i cut out the solenoid altogether?, I know that the starter button basically grounds on the handlebars which opens the gate for current to flow to the solenoid which switches on the volts to the starter motor, I'm wondering why can't i do away with the solenoid and rig up the starter button to to trigger the starter motor on its own ? I feel like i could run wire from the battery through the bike to the starter button and then run a second wire from the button through the bike to the starter motor and basically make it so the wire coming from the battery is always Hot and when i push the button it would connect the Hot wire to the starter motor wire.

does this make sense ? or am I totally going in the wrong direction here ?

thanks!

cafe' seat only has room under the hump for the rectifier and battery. need to cut out the solenoid.

The starter pulls too much current for that to work. Look at how big the wire to the solenoid and to the starter is.. it would melt the wire and switch housing.

You could eliminate the solenoid by replacing it with a heavy duty high amperage switch in it's existing location though, but you would have to reach down there to start the bike.

Or...you could just remove the solenoid.....and starter.....and kick start instead.

The seat is looking good!
