Crankshaft sprocket retention nut... how to remove?

Post by rzgkane » Thu Feb 23, 2012 10:02 pm

Can someone tell me what needs to be done to get this nut off the end of the crankshaft? Is it left-handed thread? Do I need to hold the crank still? A special tool? More persuasion?

Normally a hammer and a dull chisel do the trick. If it's spinning, put a penny between the gear and sprocket to lock it up.

Busted three knuckles in the process, but I got it off. Thanks for the tips.

that beveled washer, sorry to hijack. just put mine on, is it correct that the umm ...ok lets call that washer an "ice cream cone". does the small end of the "cone" face the nut and the large face the sprocket? thats the way it came apart and some monkey was in here before. double checking
