New CB77 Superhawk Owner in Austin, TX

Post by lhill » Wed Feb 22, 2012 2:34 pm

Hi everyone!

I'm very pleased to be a new member of the group who just purchased his first 1965 CB77 Superhawk! I've owned a few small cc vintage Hondas in the past, but this is my first 305 - I've wanted a bike like this for years, and have finally managed to get my hands on one.

Currently, it's not street legal; it's lacking a horn and mirrors, and it has a few holes in the exhaust system that I'll have to take care of before I can get it inspected here in Texas. In addition to those things, the electric starter doesn't work, the neutral light only works intermittently, and there are no 'proper' filters on the carbs.

The bike starts and seems to ride pretty well, so I'm hoping to have it on the road soon. I'd like to eventually do what I can to make it look pretty close to original. I've already learned a lot by reading on these boards and also noticed there are a couple of other Superhawk owners in Austin.

There are a few things I'm still not sure of on the bike, if anyone can point me in the right direction:

1. I can't find the horn and am assuming it's missing. Will any universal 12v horn work with the stock switch?

2. The neutral light only works intermittently. I've seen photos of the activator switch here on the forums, but can't seem to find it on my bike. Where is it located?

3. I need to replace my headers and my mufflers (the whole exhaust system has rust holes) and was looking at the aftermarket pipe sets on ebay ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/350534416755?ss ... 1438.l2649). They're several times cheaper than anything I've found here in the U.S., and I'm sure they're not as nice as the ones here, but does anyone know if they'll work? (I'm specifically just looking for the cheapest decent-looking option I can bolt on and pass inspection with).

Here's a few more photos if anyone's interested:

Neutral switch is located behind the right crankcase cover and taps into the stator's harness. You can check the rest of the system by simply grounding the light green wire heading into the right case cover and see if all is well. If not, you gotta either replace the switch inside the case or take it apart and clean the contacts.

Your horn is missing. Either Autozone or Advance Auto makes a generic 12 volt that bolts right on in the old spot under the tank, and is good and loud. Have them on both my 305 and 160. Don't get too angry with them, as they will drain the battery. A good rip of the throttle works better.

You have to do inspection for that bike in TX?

Even here in The People's Republic of Maryland, we are exempt at 25 years plus. This means you don't have to worry about mirrors, horn, or even wheels... Pay your $ and off you go.

Forget the neutral light, you wont care about it in 30 days. The one on my 160 was in and out, and after riding it for a couple months, it straightened out. You might wait and see.

I have a set of Ebay mufflers. Have not mounted them, but they seem ok. I think the chrome is pretty cheap, and I am not sure how I am going to mate the mufflers to the pipes. Maybe the stock packings will fit, not sure. PS - In the pictures your mufflers look fine. Can you repair the holes? (which must be on the bottom).

We're required in texas to get all road going vehicles inspected yearly unless they are registered as antiques. One good thing about the inspection is that they are old enough to only require the $12 inspection, not the $40 one...

Good looking bike by the way. If I were you I would keep those stock mufflers on there. Much better look than anything else out there for our superhawks (except maybe some CYB pipes).

I'd love to keep the stock mufflers - I just don't know if they're in my budget (at least right now). I could save up for a while, but I'm in a hurry to get this thing street legal so I can start riding it!

I won a used set of headers on ebay yesterday, so now I just need to pull the trigger on some mufflers. Since from what I've seen, they're going for at least $400 each (unfortunately more than I have to spend at the moment), I'm probably going to try these:

They're the closest I've seen to the stock look, and even with shipping I can get both for about $135. Even if they're not perfect, hopefully they'll get me past inspection and then I can look for something better down the road...

Unfortunately, in Texas any exhaust system that's been patched wont pass inspection. :-(

I haven't heard that one. If you get rid of that exhaust, I'd like to buy it off of you. I'm in Dallas.
