Next Step?

Post by bonsaibill » Mon Feb 20, 2012 10:02 am

Here's what I have:
1965 Dream
Compression on both sides
Spark at points
Spark at both plugs
Everything gaped
Gas coming from rebuilt petcock
Rebuilt carbs
Starter turning
Here's what I don't have:
running engine

What's up with that?

Well, we had something similar to your situation, and it turned out to be that our coil was going bad, and we had the wrong set of points. We had spark, and everything SOUNDED like it wanted to start and it even started a handful of times, but then... NOTHING.... it would turn over, but it just wouldn't "start". We put back on our OLD points, and a forum member sent me a working coil, and it started right up. We noticed that our old coil was warming up during the starting process, and that led us to believe it MIGHT be the coil. I've been told that it is rare for these coils to go bad, but, indeed that is what happened in our case. Good luck, and let us know what you find out.

Check to make sure the connector on your coil wire is not grounded to your points plate. Also, make sure your points are gapped exactly and after that, that you timing is on the money. Before gapping your points, make sure the contact surfaces are really smooth (not pitted) and spotless clean.
