It runs buttt

Post by Huck » Sun Nov 27, 2011 9:02 am

Starts right up every time--HOWEVER (why is there always a However?) there was gas leaking out the overflow tube----due to-----sticking or leaking float needle and seat or swelling bowl gasket restricting the floats???
What is the correct float level for a 67 --CA77--?
Can the needle and seat valve be purchased separetely?
Is there a source for float bowl gasket that doesn't swell from Ethanol Gasoline?

67 Dream update

Post by Huck » Thu Feb 02, 2012 8:59 am

After messing with the carb a bit, found a leak in the float. REplaced it. So now I have clean points, clean carb, and the bike runs!! I have new points and condenser to put in but---given where the condenser is located--any tips of what and how to mess with that. Before I drop the engine down to replace it--I might consider relocating the condenser. With a new float--if I lean the bike on it's kickstand--I get a little overflow come out that little hose--float level off--?? How best to adjust the float level??????
Finally I need to mess with the electronics---the turn signals are kaka--non original signals setup--doesn't look like rocket science so perhaps using my meter--I can back into that problem then it's on to getting it plated and DRIVING IT!!!!

I re-located the condenser on mine to the cam chain tensioner mount bolt, but moving to under the right side cover will be next.

If your carb is leaking when it is on the side stand, the float level might be too high.

Did you check it? (should be approx 26.5mm from the cutout on the carb body to the edge of float when the float just touches, bit not depresses the float needle plunger)
Rotate the carb on its side till you can see the float touching the plunger.....but not pushing it in at all.......that's when to measure the height.

Leaking carb

Post by Dgormley » Fri Feb 03, 2012 12:18 am

Huck, depending on how far your bike leans over on the kickstand the carb will/should overflow. Float level is set in a level position.........................D. Also, you don't "drive" bikes, ya ride em.

Ride verses Drive

Post by Huck » Fri Feb 03, 2012 8:40 am

Humm---never thought about riding verses driving but I stand corrected. hehehhe I know I ride a bike and drive a truck---however when I took my bike out for a brief RIDE yesterday, it stopped about 100ft down the road. It would start back up but would stall. So here I am scratching my head or rather my helmet---check the choke, ----what the hell----humm. Why is the bike dying on me. So now I'm pushing my bike~~~~ OH, perhaps I need to change the position of the petcock lever to ON~~. DA!
Now I can explain this---I spent the better part of the day working on a recent purchase of a 1975 CB 125s----. Replaced rear tire-tube, got a key from westenhills, throttle totally stuck--piston in the carb was seized---pulled the carb--full of the ugliest crap bad gas etc. I have ever seen, float leaked--full of brown stiky gas and everything coated thick with crap. Now I'm breathing this stuff and can't get the smell off my hands. So sitting there kind of discusted, I notice the left switch asm on the handlebar is broken--the welded stop on the front tube to prevent oversteer of the front fork is broken off~~(it gets worse). Then just for kicks before I call it a day, I pull the oil dip stick only to find the entire crankcase filled to the top with black gas-oil. My guess is the float failed and allowed all the gas in the tank to flow down and into the block. The bike kicks over fine but I have no idea of what condition the internals are in. I drain all this crap and put fresh oil in the block. Today I get to order a new float and it'a going to be another week before I can try to start this---. So my brain is just a little overwhelmed thus the above lack of focus. hehehehe

Dream rides like ---

Post by Huck » Wed Mar 28, 2012 9:17 am

After getting everything working--the bike started on 1/2 a crank. So I finally took it for a short ride---12 miles. When I got back, my back was tingleing, my hands were tingleing, my knees were shaking etc. A neighbors dog ran out to say hello and the bikes brakes were marginal at best. So, in as much as I love the looks, the ride leaves much to be desired. So got a wild hair and put the bike on Craigslist--sold in one day for 4x what I paid for it. Not disappointed but----old bikes are a lot more fun to mess with then to ride on with 66 year old bones!!
Still have my 64---CA95 which runs unbelieveable but looks a bit rough. No rectifier on it--can't believe someone removed it without replacing it~~~~. Is there a radioshack replacement available for the solidium rectifiers?
