Quick Question Re: Cotter Pin!

Post by akpasta » Tue Jan 31, 2012 5:19 pm

I've been checking on the right-side center-stand bolt as it has a tendency to come a bit loose. I've got a cotter pin in there but I notice (at work), that the nut is loose again. The nut backed out to the pin. Think I can make it 2-miles home with the cotter pin holding the nut on, or do you think there's any possibility that the nut could back off more and break the pin??

This is the second time it's loosened up, the first I tightened it back down and hoped for the best. I think this time I'm going to have to get under there and re-fasten it for good with loc-tite and a spring washer instead of a regular washer, as that seems to have taken care of the left side for good.

The cotter pin will be fine to get you home. You need a lock washer(spring washer) on this side like we told you when you were having problems with the left side. I've never used loc-tite on my center stand bolts. Lock washer-nut-cotter pin just like it was originally and never had a problem.

Found a crescent wrench in the tool kit at work to tighten it down for the ride home. There was a lock washer on it already, so I just left it. Used red loctite for extra insurance. I'll keep checking it to see if the lock-washer was less effective than a spring washer, but the loctite will probably make a difference. Was able to re-use the cotter pin as well, which was nice.

thanks!
