Your picture shows the later type with the ring on the end. The red sealing ring fits inside this. There is nothing to 'attach' the muffler to the pipe just the rubber ring between them. You are fine to pull off that goop once you have a new seal to put in there. :-) This is the David Silver page for the early type... http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/part ... ber_16027/ I cannot find the later type but I have bought some in the past. We'll all have a better idea what's actually there if ya take it apart.
Sort of looks like ya have the black sleeve there ta me. ...............lm
The bigger gray one on ebay was $72!! It looks just like the David Silver ones for $6. How can that be!? That's such a huge difference in price. I thought the PO didn't want to shell out 72 bucks for a piece of rubber so he just slapped some epoxy on it. I guess I'll have to take off all the gunk and see what's in there. I just wanted to have the replacement part ready before I took it apart so I could put it right back together again. (I finally got it running so I want to ride!) I'll let you know!
