Well I got an M6x16 pan-head screw and there was nothing, seemingly for it to screw into. Does that mean the threads stripped out all the way or could it be a larger size? Doesn't seem likely, as the M6 fit through the hole on the cover just fine. Odd.

Guess I'll have to pull the cover off and look at tapping into the case. Is this inadvisable for any reason?

Might try a 20mm to see if there are any "extra threads" left inside.

If not, it might have already been tapped at a larger size, though unlikely unless you are lucky.

You could use a helicoil and stay with 6mm size if you want.

Hmm, Davo said he didn't re-tap it so I'm gonna try a 22 length.

So what's behind the cover exactly? I know the oil filter and what not, but how come it isn't leaking without that top right screw in?

Andy,

Just take a long 6mm screw as a test and see if you have any threads to bite into. Don't go gung ho, but gingerly screw it in and see how deep you can go. Mark it to depth, back it out and you can measure your length.

Just for grins and giggles I measured a couple of clutch side covers. Early small hole cover measured 16mm deep and a later large hole cover measured 24mm deep from the face of the side cover. I do not know what issue is on your bike.
