baffles for cl77

Post by ccscrambler » Tue Jan 17, 2012 9:09 pm

I just purchased a 1967 cl77 a few months ago. Normally it would have a welded-on muffler. This bike has a make shift slip-on muffler that doesn't work well (it leaks). I attempted to install a NOS slip-on muffler but the pipes appear to be too short. Once the muffler is slipped on the exhaust pipe, the mounting bracket is too far forward to mount to the specified location on the grab bar and fender. Yet the pipes appear to be appropriate for a slip-on muffler. In fact, holes are in the pipes for mounting the baffles and there is no sign of the pipes being cut off.
Did pipe lengths vary from year to year and is it possible that what I have is a set of pipes that are unmodified but go on a different year bike?

In any event, I was wondering if it is possible to buy a new or good used set of baffles for this bike. That would allow me to run the bike without the muffler, thereby eliminating the need to find a longer set of pipes that would allow the muffler bracket to line up with holes in the grab bar and fender. I want to keep the bike as stock as possible without having to locate and purchase a new or used set of exhaust pipes with a weld-on muffler. I would entertain this option as well if a set was available.

Any assistance on this matter would be appreciated. ccscrambler

Scrambler baffles

CC, I've heard the old VW bug baffles will work. Do a search on the subject, I believe it's under " Scrambler, muffler(baffle) or not" readers poll...................D

The VW exhaust tips they make today are pretty junky compared to what they made years ago. But they will work and they fit inside the stock pipes. I've seen several guys run them.

My guess is the holes in your pipes are there for Snuff-r-nots. Somebody cut off the welded muffler and put those one.

Another choice is the old Bates shorty mufflers. EMGO makes a copy now. They are a bit loud, but have a great sound.

I made a set of baffles and they work great. Nice sound without being obnoxious. Here's a link to the thread.

Here's a video of my big bore scrambler running with a set of the VW tips. I got these from a locally owned auto parts. They had these way in the back in dusty old boxes. Made in Austria. $12 each. My pipes were hacked off as well and as you can see, I wasn't really concerned about keeping the bike too original.

They are not as quiet as snuff-or-nots, but are a bunch quieter than open pipes.

I don't think your dog likes your bike.
