Hi,
I have several CL77s and really love these bikes. I believe the manufacturer's original recommendation for motor oil was 30 weight non-detergent, which is what I have used over the years. A couple of years ago I asked my Honda dealer what he recommended and he said 10/40 weight detergent. The 30 weight non-detergent oil is impossibe to find where I live unless I am willing to use 30 weight non-detergent compressor oil found at the local True Value Hardware store. It is on the shelf with all the automotive oils. However, this oil is not sanctioned by ASI or SAE and I'm not sure if I should be using it my CL77s.
What is your opinion, in general, about the use of the 30 weight non-detergent oil? If this is the best option over multi grade detergent oils? If this is the best option, is the compressor oil I describe above a good choice or should I insist on automotive ASI or SAE 30 weight non-detergent oil?
Also, the new oils have an ASI grade SN designation which I am told has little or no zinc in its formula unlike the previous SM designation which does have zinc. Should I avoid the newer SN oil, and if I'm forced to use it, should I be adding a zinc additive.
Thanks for any assistance on these matters. I want to give these old scramblers the best care I possibly can.
Thanks again,
