Should I get a cb77 or a cl350?

Post by akpasta » Tue Dec 13, 2011 6:33 pm

I LOVE the look of the SuperHawk. It's totally beautiful. There's a guy in my area who just restored one, and I'm strongly considering buying it for $3500. But, there's someone else in the area who has a pretty good looking 1969 CL350 with very low mileage, in great shape, for a fraction, at $1875.

Can someone help me dissect the differences in performance and what not between these two bikes? I'll primarily be riding in the city but would also want to take it on longer trips.

Any drawbacks to the Hawk that the CL improved on? visa versa?

thanks!

I have both. One '67 CB77 and one '73 CL350.
Both are cool bikes.
If you prefer the nostalgia over parts availability and functionality of the bike, then I'd say go for the CB. There were something like a half-million to a million of the 350 twins sold and Honda still makes a carries a lot of the parts.

The CB has 4 gears, the CL has 5.
I've often contemplated changing the sprockets on the CL to get more of a CB350 kind of feel, you know, for more of a highway type of feel (which there is a lot of highway in MT.)

I have not riden my CB very much as I just got it last fall and it's far too cold to ride. I'm almost done restoring it and will know more about it's performance once the snow melts.

That price seems kinda high for the CL.
The CB price is hard to judge though. There are some nice CB77's that I've seen pop up on here that went for much less than that.

Hope this helps.

He bought the Superhawk.
Refer to his recent "Syncing idle speed" post.
