Which cotters ?
Which cotters ?I have my engine from the '66 cafe project out on the bench in a zillion pieces and I see that I will have to replace the cotters on the trans shafts. One is broken, so I will do both and the springs. There are 2 numbers listed: #23941-259-305, and #23941-250-010. I assume that one number is the standard size, and one number is an oversize (ie. thickness) cotter. Which is which ? Is -010 perhaps .010 thicker ?
The only other item that I can see is the shift forks look to be a bit worn. Replace ? Can I build them up with a little weld and redress ? The gears are showing a little wear on the teeth, but not excessive, and the undercuts on the dogs that engage the different gears are still in good shape. No chips anywhere. Anything else I should be looking transmission wise while I have the cases split ? ( Any and all useful information will be rewarded promptly with the usual payment-grateful thanks !) I'm pretty sure the 305 is the offset cotter. There are two different offsets. You'll have to install them, and then check dog engagement to determine which is best for you. Shift fork repair has been discussed here, and is not very viable. Post some pics of your forks when you get a chance. Davo

cottersLet's see if I can get these pics attached. (LM - I will try calling you. My wife's cousin had the same problem calling us and her mother this morning from western Iowa.)

cottersMy thanks to Loud Mouse for a very informative phone conversation last evening. Think I have things sorted out now. Now if I can just get it all clean I will be back in business I think !
