Front Sprocket Spline Size?

I have a 1967 Honda CL77 and it needs to have the front sprocket replaced (15-tooth)
I have ordered two different sprockets from two different vendors and on both of them, the sprocket will not fit over the shaft. Seems that the spline height is too great and this will not allow the sprocket to install correctly. Both vendors have told me to send them back the sprockets.
by the way- these are 14 tooth sprockets.

Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Or better yet have a good 15 tooth sprocket they could sell?

Hello Bulterier,

I had exactly the same problem. Honda did change their splines from deep to shallow, but the size of the shaft was supposed to be the same (I understand) and the shallow splined sprockets should fit in the deep splined shaft. Anyway, I had a sprocket that looked exactly like it should fit, and it wouldn't. I ended up taking a file to the sides of the splines (I measured with a micrometer and found the splines just a tiny bit smaller). It took forever - these sprockets are hard steel! But I finally got it to fit onto the shaft.

There are some 14t sprockets right now on ebay, and they look like the shallow spline that you need. You could try one of them. If it doesn't go right on, take a file to it! :-)

Either Nick at ohiocycles.com or sprocketspecialists.com can get you the correct sprocket! Not the cheapest alternaives, but definately the easiest!

I have 14T and 16T shallow spline sprockets for the late CL77 with the 3 threaded holes. I have 15T but only in the deep spline version. $20 shipped.

On the sprockets with the three holes, Do you have the metal stay that securely bolts on to the side of the sprocket?

Sorry I don't have any spares. I also can't find a part number that is specific to that retainer.

Took your advice G6.
Set up the deep spline sprocket in a vice and took a small grinding wheel on drill to the inside.
Took about an hour (give or take) and I soon had it ready to fit on the shallow spline shaft.
I used the old worn shallow spline sprocket as a guide.
So! It can be done!
