Bogging down S'Hawk 305

Post by roadcapDen » Mon Sep 26, 2011 7:46 am

305 SuperHawk starts up OK but won’t take any/much throttle, it bogs down bad ie not enough to ride it. Float bowls are full, all connections tight, slides are OK no air leaks between carb and cylinder.
Changed the gas and plugs and checked the timing and valves w/ Ed Moores tuning page.
This engine has new pistons and rings in a honed cylinder with less than 5 miles on since rebuild, it does have some grey exhaust smoke..
Exhausts are open and I have small foam UNI filters on it.

Any ideas where I should look next Gent’s?
Thanks…

Not much to go on there, but first, I'd make sure you're getting a good flow of fuel to the carbs - bowls off, floats hanging (pan underneath). The grey smoke could point to a rich condition (usually black smoke) or oil burning (blue). Given the fresh rebuild you could be burning a little oil. If you're getting enough fuel to the carbs, they could be flooding (floats leaking or set too high) or you could have clogged main jets. If it idles at all, it probably isn't flooding. How did you get the 5 miles on it? Did it run OK for a while?

Thanks,

Took carbs off again, both floats were approx 1/2 full, cleaned carbs again and better flushed the lines w/ fresh gas, took foam off both carbs, she fired up and I went for a short ride, all seemed good.
Parked for a few minutes strated up again no fire on right side and right side points are arcing.
Plugs where sooty black but not oily.

It did run OK before it was parked a few months ago.

Bad condensor?
Too rich?

Sounds like it's running rich. What size and brand jets and jet needle are in the carbs? Did you blow all orfices through with compressed air?

+1 on running rich if the plugs are sooty. I would also check the spark plug caps. Unscrew them and clip off a 1/4". While you have them off check the resistance, at temperature if possible but don't burn yourself... (disclaimer) Your altitude is about the same as mine in Cleveland and it's not a problem.

Thanks all,

Stock carbs and jets, #42, #135, needle clip at middle and everything is clean, floats at 22.5.
Air mix screw at 1 1/8 turns out. No air filters on.

Ran good again last night but only firing on L cylinder, put new plugs all is good (both firing) shut down, still sooty and R side not firing AGAIN, keeps killing R side plugs?

Would bad condensor kill plugs?

Check compression at both sides. Seems though you either are running very rich on one side (carb issue) or you lack compression to fire the gas/air mix which may be fouling the plug (posible valve problem, ring issue, bore too sloppy and need to go one size larger on the pistons, etc)...

If you've got good compression and they are close to being the same.....perhaps swap out the coils to see if the problem follows? If it does, you may have a bad coil on that side (?)
