Remove shock bushings CL77

Post by Dickj » Fri Sep 23, 2011 2:52 pm

I'm attempting to remove the rear cushion rubber bushings from the rear shocks of my 1966 CL77. So I don't wreck anything, my question is: Am I only pushing out the rubber part or is it attached to a steel collar? I have looked at it close but cant tell. I tried to push out the bushing just outside the rubber part but no way, so it seems like I am shooting for the rubber parts only when I build the steel bushing to remove it.

Thanks, Dickj Santa Rosa, CA

Pretty sure that these are bonded bushes. Steel-rubber-steel.

Thanks G-- I was afraid of that. I guess I'll try again. God Bless this old corroded stuff! Dickj Santa Rosa, CA

Dick

Interestingly your question made me look at the shocks from my dismantled bikes. Superhawk and CB160 shocks just have a loose rubber sleeve which fits over a stud on the frame whereas the CLs have a top clevis on the frame and this bonded bush. At a push you could probably use the CB77 style and just get a bush made up to make up the dimension between bolt and rubber.

I have not taken one of these shock bushes out but I did make a tool to remove similar bushes in Dream front suspension arms. I would try using some gentle heat on the aluminium top eye and that might release its hold a little.
