What finish did Honda use on their Aluminum?

Post by Rock160 » Tue Sep 13, 2011 4:05 pm

Engine side covers (Engine, not sheet metal parts), triple tree, handlebar clamps, and wheel hubs, all appear to be unfinished aluminum.

Were these unfinished from the factory, painted, clear coated, or clear anodized on the 1960's hondas?

(I'm working on a 1966 CB160)

As for the engine side covers, I think it was a color they called "Cloud Silver". I used Dupli-Color engine enamel called Aluminum DE1615 and it looks really close to original. You couldn't tell unless you had the two next to one another.
Some people use some kind of Krylon aluminum color paint with great results but it's kind of hard to find and if you can find it most stores will only order a box of it which they would like for you to pay for. Not sure what the paint code is.

Wheel hubs had a clear varnish on them. Not really sure about the triple tree or the bar clamps on the CB160 though.

Hi - There's a lot of old posts in the "Paint" section, but I use VHT High Temperature Engine Enamel Universal Aluminum SP127. Its available from the Summitt Racing Website. Its a good match and its fuel resistant. You have to bake the parts at 200F for an hour, but you can use your kitchen oven after everyone goes to bed, and nobody will know - it doesn't smell. Attached is a pic of a side cover I painted next to a NOS piece. If you want a can to try, email me and I'll send you one (I bought a case last year and probably won't use it all). swmrescue@cox.net

I've never seen a code or name for the case paint or the aluminum fork sliders. ...................lm
