Scrambler rims

Post by Dick Eastman » Sat Sep 03, 2011 6:57 pm

I picked up some parts today for my '66 CL77. Among the parts were two complete wheels/hubs and one rim only. The rim only measured 2.75" wide, but it had 40 spoke holes. The rear complete wheel the same, but the hub is square where the sprocket [37T] bolts on. My original rear wheel is 2.75" wide, 36 spoke, and the hub is round where the sprocket bolts on.

Did the CL72 have a square hub and 40 spoke rear at any time? The reason I ask is that the group lot of parts I purchased are all Scrambler parts.

Thanks,
Dick

Yes, the CL72s and 65 CL77 had the small ubs, with the square hub for the sprocket. it also uses a smaller diameter axle. How's the chrome on that rim? If it's nice, I might be interested.

It was a 40 spoke as well?
I've been trying to find better rims for mine, as they are quite rusted:

The one rim has minor rust but has 3 dings in it; the other has more rust, but both are better than mine. I do not know if I could use them to replace mine yet, but will keep your interest in mind if I decide to trade for a better 36 hole rim. Thanks.

If you are working on a budget, you might consider powder coating your rims with "chrome" powdercoat. It is not really chrome, but looks really good and it a great way to save a rusted rim for low bucks. Local shop did my two rims for $60 each. Rechroming is going to cost you $200 each minimum and probably more.

regards,
Rob

Thanks, Rob. I have thought about that. For $200 or less, I could replace with Akronts or DID aluminum rims also. So far, all the original rims I have seen are rusted. I have talked with a local plater who will strip the chrome and remove the rust for reasonable cost, and then I would do the metal-working myself to save money, then re-chrome. The only way I can see how deep the pitting is, is to strip and acid dip. It may be more work than I want.
