Lean, Mean and Ugly

Greatings. I was pointed in the direction of this forum after spending some time at HondaTwins.net

I revived a very sad 1971 CB350 last year, had a ball, and then had to let it go. I searched for another long dead heap and found it in a CL77...My knowledge of this thing stops there. I was hoping to find some help here from you folks.
I tried finding the year through the vin but can't seem to come to a conclusion. I'm going to need to replace alot and learn alot. I took my 350 down to nothing but nuts and bolts. I enjoyed it thoroughly and I am not shy when it comes to long cold nights in the barn. SO I guess I'll get started....
first question.... Whats the trick to removing the right side cover where the clutch cable leads through?

Welcome to the forum! I've started with worse for sure! Make sure all of the screws are removed. You'll probably have to rock the kicker back and forth. There are fine splines that that knuckle slides over, and they are probably rusty. Some GENTLE prying may also be required. Bike appaears to be a 65, small brake hubs, steel lower fork sliders. 66 and 67s had twin leading shoe brakes, and aluminum sliders. Post the VIN, and we can tell for just about sure!

Welcome to the Forum.
That case has a screw underneath the dyno cover that's easy to overlook.
It might help to squirt some grease into the clutch actuator and kick starter zirc fittings, they're probably dry from the looks of it.
I'm guessing that the problem is that kick starter joint (arm) is frozen onto the splined shaft it engages with inside the case.
Try squirting some liquid wrench inside the case on to the kick starter assy and tap the case gently with a rubber mallet to loosen things up.
It should come off with a bit of whiggling.

Got that cover off. Awesome. Looking pretty rough so far. Another question. Is there a good alternative to the old rectifiers somethin maybe silicone? And also, as far as the coils, willthosefrom an xs work off the top of anyone's head? I used xs coils on my cb on recommendation from a yamaha guy and was very satisfied. Thanks

Hi,

Welcome to the forum PapaWoody, I see you found the way.
The search function is a very good start for acquiring knowledge about these beautifully machines.
A CL77 is a complete different bike then the CL250 and CL350's, in every way.

The www.hondatwins.net is a very informative forum, and a CL77 is indeed a Honda twin, but this site is devoted only to the CB72/77, CL72/77 and dreams, and contains tons of info and a lot of specialists.

Thanks for adding your location,

Jensen

Well upon removing the cover i found the rod for the clutch is missing. That worries me. Usuall when parts are missing inside, someone up the line got frustrated and neglected to put things back. But we will see
