exhaust studs

Post by cdf7640 » Mon Aug 29, 2011 9:18 pm

I noticed that after the reassembly of my exhaust header on my CB77, that it was leaking exhaust a bit. So I went and tightened up the nuts that hold the collars in place and one of the exhaust studs snapped. I was thinking about just JB welding it back together since the nut doesn't go near that part of the thread that broke, but was wondering if they are double threaded and also how easy they are to replace.

I downloaded the CB77 Parts Manual, and it looks like the part I'm looking for is a "6x40 stud" part number 90045-259-000 - is this the correct part? Is there a right way to get these out of the cylinder head and replace? Any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks!!

C

I don't think jb weld will hold in this situation. I would remove the collar and see if there is any of the stud still showing. If so you might be able to grab on to it with a vise grips and take it out. You should be able to find a stud at an auto parts store. If the stud is broke off flush or below the surface things get a bit more involved.

Thanks Kevin!

I'll let you know how it goes. Right now there is very minimal exhaust leakage so I'm not too concerned with it, but do want to change it out when I can. Do you know if that's the right part number I'm looking at? There are two different studs listed on the parts diagram with different measurements - one at 35mm and the other at 40mm.

Thanks

Chris

If you ride it with only one stud you may end up having to repair 2 studs.

You're right. Impatience getting the best of me. I was able to get the remaining stud out by using a blow torch and some PB Blaster. The screw backed out pretty easily with a pair of vise-grips after that. I was able to find a bolt with the same threading, it's a bit shorter than the original, but it worked perfectly. So I'll leave it that way until I can find the original stud. Thanks!

I think you actually need a 6x28 stud.

You could insert it with a Helicoil to reduce the probability of it sticking again or stripping out if you use a bolt.
