Crankshaft Rebuild

Post by Mike2cl77 » Mon Aug 22, 2011 6:44 pm

OK I have IDd my boxes of parts and it is time to rebuild. I am looking for advice for bearings in the engine & trans. Can someone point me in the proper direction? I am looking for the (4) crank bearings, (4) cam bearings, and transmission bearings. I am not sure what is all available anymore any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Also pistons, I have some high compression pistons but unfortunately I am going to need a bore, so I will need pistons, rings, pins, and clips. Are the high compression pistons worth looing for?

Crank bearings

Post by conbs » Tue Aug 23, 2011 12:35 am

The 2 outside crank bearings are not too hard to replace. The inside bearings are a different story. The crank presses together. Getting it apart is a bit of a chore, but can be done with a shop press. I think I used a 10 ton. I just took one end off of a crank. Turned out the donor crank was a later model (both CA) and the con rod big end shaft was a different size (1 mm) so the donor outside counterweight wouldn't press on. I don't know if CL's used different cranks.
The problem is that often the crank parts will be bad. Moisture eats the bearing surfaces and then you have junk. The remaining parts of my crank were in awesome shape, but here I sit because the early CA crank is a very rare part.
If you are adventurous, you can take on the task, but know that when you press the parts back together again, everything has to be PERFECTLY aligned. There are no splines. Just a tight press fit. Guys who have done it before say it is VERY difficult. I am adventurous, so I took on the task, but only because I was just changing one end piece. I would probably not try to change inner bearings.
So your choices are: 1 Go for it (but wait to buy the bearings until you have yours apart and are sure the surfaces are good); 2. See if your inner bearings are good enough that you can just replace the outer bearings; 3. Buy a good used crank; 4. Send it out to have a pro do it.
Good luck. There is a lenghty thread of my trials if you care to check it out. It may be helpful to read before you decide what you want to do.

Thanks, I took it into a reputable shop, Q&E in Anaheim, and he recommended doing what you eluded to. Replace outside bearings clean up the two inner bearings the big rod bearings feel good sounds like the right call. Any suggestions where to get the crank bearings. I checked Tim McDowells website prices seem high, but then again I haven't been shopping too much yet. Any advice on a piston set, rings, pins, and clips? Again Tims price of $269 seems really high. Q&E says a bore and pistons for about the same price. I was hoping to get the high compression pistons, are they worth the effort?

Try http://www.ohiocycle.com/ for pistons, ring, pins and clips. He has NOS and aftermarket. Prices are probably as good as you'll find. As far as high compression pistons, you can raise the compression some just by going to a CA piston - see the discussion in this link;

Thanks for the info I wan't real sure about the big domed piston. I was always told high compression is a poor mans power and will take its toll on the rest of the motor.

Anyone with any input on the two outer crank bearings where to find them or a cross reference #?

Check this link on the bearings;
http://www.honda305.com/forums/viewtopi ... t+bearings

If that doesn't do it, do a search on crankshaft bearings. Most topics have been addressed before so a search can give you a wealth of information, in some cases enough to confuse you (as in the case of what oil to use you find a lot of different opinions.)

Post by Mike2cl77 » Wed Aug 24, 2011 8:54 pm

Thanks for the link OldStan, Oh btw been through Galt a number of times, I have searched and searched and I haven't found anything to tell me where to get these bearings. I know for a fact you guys are not tearing down these engines and putting them back togeher with old bearings, nope don't believe it for one minute especially you lm. I called TimMcDowell he said sorry, I got part numbers coming from fiches and BillSilver's book and I just am not sure where and what to buy. Just like the link OldStan sent me, I too have the

NACHI 6306S6HS / NACHI 6206S7HS
I think the Honda#s are 91001-259-020 / 91002-259-010

off to google I go again.
