Custom air filters on eBay: Too good to be true?Honda Dream 305 CA77 CL77 CB77 Custom Chrome Air Filter :
http://tinyurl.com/y8guzr I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to parts for these old bikes. I'd love to think of set of these filters would work great, but the fact that they're cheap AND washable makes them seem a little too good to be true. Thoughts?
I put a similar one on last spring and it has worked well for the last 2000 miles this summer/fall. If ya want to get by cheap its the way to go. Double check to make sure that its the correct diameter. Its nothing like the original but if your missing all the original filter parts and the filter it will easily run you over $100 to purchase. Nobody even knows its not the correct filter unless you were to remove the sidecover. Keep in mind you may run a little lean with this filter.
These are basically just cheap knockoffs of K&N filters that are widely available for an MSRP of about $40. The only thing that bugs me about them is that it says "washable and need no oil". The K&N's are high flow filters that rely on the oil to trap the dirt and keep it in a washable state. They are also "lifetime" filters because of this. These appear to be little more than screens, and without the oil I have to wonder how washable they actually are.
The bottom line is, they are certainly better than nothing, but perhaps not the best money spent. I'd stick to not riding in sandy or dusty conditions with these. Also, remember that if these don't provide much back pressure (hi flow) then factory jetting may not run as well. i have an original filter (in bad shape) that came w/ my bike. i don't run it.
i heard someone here talk of a k&n for $35. the one i run is sort of a cheap k&n knock-off that i bought at my local independent cycle shop for about as much as the ebay one sells for. i just took the damn carb off, matched up one that fit, and i go! cheap, yeah. easy to remove and clean, too, which is more than i can say for the original one. 10 bux, no one sees the dang thing anyway. someone else said on this site that he cares more about riding his bike than of the details. i agree. ride.
