Davo, like I said, I've been in both your states. upper NY and upper CA are both beautiful, the lower part of the states you can keep. Both states have cities that have several times more people than we have in my entire state so I understand where you come from. I live in a rural area in the foot hills of the Ozark Mountains. Over 4 million acres of the Mark Twain National Forest full of deer and wildlife and roads where livestock frequently get loose and kids play on many of the lesser traveled farm roads. This create problems for all vehicles. There have been times I wish I had a train air horn on my bike. I can personally tell you the consequences of hitting a deer and have a friend who will never walk right from hitting a calf. Riders are killed every year here from this. I just get ticked from those criticizing others because we don't live like you do. Not all riding situations are the same for everyone.
So you and your politicians join whatever you want to, hug a tree, but until you've walked in my shoes, keep your criticism and judgement of others to your self. That's not what this discussion was supposed to be about.

Sorry to have offended you, David. Calling you Dave was purely a friendly gesture and had no other implications. Not sure how someone can put Loud pipes save lives in an email and later claim it was in jest, but I'm open minded enough to accept you at your word. I was not looking to pick a fight. As I said, I was not picking on you. I was addressing the concept, which you by the way, brought into this thread, not me. Being an American with roots in North America that go back to the 1600's I fully believe in the right to free speech. That means you can say what you want and I can in turn say what I want in response if I wish. You seem to be worried about folks from my state telling you what you can do, while you don't mind telling me what I can do. You can't have it both ways, David. I'm 59, and I too have been riding since I was 14 or 15. I don't think that gives me any special rights nor does it make me immune to the laws passed in my state or at the Federal level. I'm also a shooter and started shooting long before I can actually remember, having gone to the range with my Dad since I was probably able to hold a gun. I've watched the 2nd amendment been chipped away by politicians from all over this country including the South. In response to Slick Willy Klinton I moved from an annual to life member of the NRA. Liberals are liberals whether they eat BBQ or sushi. I see the same thing coming for motorcylists. Federal lands are being closed to off road riders, states are passing exhaust restrictions requiring EPA approved exhausts. Once CA does something, it's only a matter of time before the other states fall in step. Remember polution controls on cars? Having people say something that you may not like is the price you pay for living in a free society. I know first hand having lived in many of the countrys where you cannot speak your mind. So, sorry if I offended you. But it will be a cold day in Hell before I let you tell me what I can and cannot comment on here or any other forum. respectfully submitted, Rob
Rob, I did take it personal when you used my name in your reply. I stand by my statement that In my area , as many other parts of the country it's not against the law to have straight pipes and it doesn't offend anyone. I understand that many parts it is.
I'm curious if you are going to get a response about your right to own a gun from one of the do-gooders I was talking about. You are 100% right about what starts in CA is soon copied in other states. That is exactly what I was talking about. Laws created for CA, NY and politicians in Washington DC does not reflect everyone's environment. I've enjoyed many of your post and helpful suggestions and have my utmost respect. Just like you enjoy and defended your rights, so do I and did. Rob same here. I know we both enjoy our freedoms as Americans. Our views are probably not as far apart as it sounds, I've only been out of the country one time and being close to my age you know when and where.
I grew up listening to my elders talk about how the women did all the preparing of food, cooking, raising the kids, collecting firewood etc. All the men had to do was hunt, fish and and protect the camp. White man came along with all his laws thinking he could improve on that. Now that was meant to be humorous. Beer sounds great. I'll provide the Memphis style BBQ. Thanks to allthanks for everyone taking the time to post their preferances on the muffler. I've been exploring the many subjects here on the forum since I like all the models from the hawks to dreams too. I am going to leave the muffler in place for awhile to see how it runs. But it does look clunky on there! As for loud pipes, I live just north of daytona (for 50 years) and get to experience bikeweek and biketoberfest each year......I don't really mind them except at midnight to 3 AM when the bars are closing and they are blasting down A1A near my home! If any of you visit the local events with your old bikes please e-mail me and maybe we can take a ride around town. Every once in a while I have been fortunate to ride with some visitors on Norton's, Kaw triples and RD yamahas while on my S 90 or X6 but I never see any superhawks, scramblers or dreams. Do see 350 Honda's once in awhile. well, thanks again. It's fun to ride down memory lane once in a while! Tim
my 2 cents is I just finished restoring my 4th cl77, this one has the welded on muffler, the other 3 had straight pipes and snuff or nots. They were loud but so is my 77 shovelhead with dual straight fishtails, but I don't ride wide open all the time like some fools, so at a lower steady speed the straight pipes aren't too bad. I've had lawn mowers that the exhaust is more annoying than my scrambler. Then of course I too live in the sticks with no neighbors, so noise is not a concern. I will say at night time on the scrambler with open pipes, it will sure give you a light show! My latest is fairly quiet, the muffler is unmolested and still has the baffles in it. Really not loud enough for me, but its original. If I had my choice, I'd go for straights and snuff or nots! nutt
