hard to shift..any ideas?

Post by junk726 » Mon May 02, 2011 12:03 am

K guys..so i got the scrambler running! And wow is she a monster!:) soon as it fired up i remembered the feeling i had when i was 19! Anyways..so excited after some long hours to get it back up and running..BUT im not sure if i am having tranny issues..i cant seem to get her to shift past 2nd...im wondering if its a cluth cable issue? Or perhaps since it hasnt been running for 30 years..shift forks are sticky? Im not scared to have to dig into the bottom end..just more scared of being able to find the parts necessary;) anyways..any suggestions? Could it be as simple as wrong clutch lever? Cable? Im just not comfortable "jamming" it thru gears..and it wont even go into 3rd when running...PO does have wrong shift lever on her..that i can tell..he had all kinds of crazy wrong parts on it:( thanx in advance guys! Man she sounds sweet!:)

I had this same issue with my SuperHawk after having had my NOVA 5 speed just put in, so I don't know if this also applies to Scramblers. The shift linkage (at least on the SuperHawks) has a triangular shaped index -- with the SuperHawks it should be indexed at 11 o'clock. I had mine pointed to 12 o'clock, and it shifted exactly as you describe. Pulled the linkage out from the shaft, rotated it counterclockwise to 11 o'clock, bingo.

Here again, I'm not too familiar with Scramblers so I don't know if they have the same kind of linkage, but if they do, give that a try.

Junk,

Make sure the shift lever isn't hitting on the footpeg bracket or the clutch cover.

shifting

Junk,
I read through all your previous posts and did not see that you got into the tranny. I've split a few of these things apart and have found in about half of them that the tranny parts were coated with a thick coat of old oil varnish from a PO's neglect and abuse. That condition made for some very stiff parts movement. At least one was so bad I could not move the forks at all until I cleaned them.
I for one found that part of my preparation to getting them running was a case splitting and thorough cleaning.
So if, as Davo suggested, your shift lever is correctly position; your choices would be to split and clean or perhaps some one here can recommend a cleaning solution to slosh through it and free up those parts. It may even free up on its own as you limber her up with use assuming you can get her in gear. Hope this helps,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Rusty

Thanks guys! I pulled foot bracket off..its not hitting..but definitely hard to get thru gears and back down:( so looks like i will have to do a bottom end inspection..i can handle it..but my question is how readily available are the parts needed such as gaskets? Id like to just do the whole thing..top end/bottom..why not at this point;) and no..i havent done anything but cleaned beyond dirty carbs and rebuilt em, flushed tank, new tires, lubed cables, new plugs and she fired up!:) sure wish she'd shift so i could test her out..but no worries..thanx again guys! Also..i wanna check oil filter..do i just yank the side cover off..clean it up and fill her back up?
