starter porblem ( small sprocket/ starter mechanism)

my e-ignition works and is new. but i when i press the ignition the electric start mechanism is moving but my external small sprocket to the right of the rotor is not moving consistently it will spin then stop but i can still hear the mechanism moving inside the motorcycle . it is not starting instantly like it should or use to. there is a new battery aswell. any input?

Chances are you've sheered the small pin that holds the planetary housing inside the starter, allowing it to spin instead of the output shaft and sprocket. You'll have to pull the starter and the right hand cover on it to find out.

Hi tavarama,

There are several things that you need to check with the starter, which, by the way, is virtually a fail-safe system and much easier to fix than some of the new motorcycles.

1) You have to have a good battery. The system works on centrifugal force, and if the battery is low, it spins slowly and will not engage the dogs on the crankshaft.

2) You could have a broken or sticky part in the clutch mechanism, which is on the crankshaft. You need to pull the stator magnet with a 16mm bolt, 1.5 pitch thread (First take the small bolt out of the stator - that just secures it from vibrations). Unfasten the clutch from the stator rotor, and be careful not to lose the little dogs and small springs! Wash everything out with solvent, and don't grease it. Some light oil is probably okay - not sure. Put everything back together.

3) The other thing to check is your starter itself. If the sprocket is actually sheared or something - which I doubt. But anything can happen.

I took this to mean the chain wasn't turning. With a new battery and the chain/sprockets not turning it rules out the clutch unit if the starter is still turning, but then again it wouldn't be the first time this old fart misunderstood what someone was saying.

Hey Oldstan,

Actually, the description was not clear. But since I've owned my cb77 for over 28 years, I've seen a lot with the starter thing. The battery has to be good and strong - if not, the starter itself might not be spinning. The compression from the motor can stop it. These starters are pretty rugged, and unless something drastic happened, the gear on the motor won't strip. It's most likely a weak battery, or a problem with the clutch. Of course - none of us have seen the motorcycle, so we're all just guessing!!!

i think it may be that my bike is not charging the battery. if i start the bike once is is hesitant to start again . it is literally draining my new battery every push of the button. also. there is no combustion in my right side. the carbs are perfect. the spark is perfect. what could be causing this cold running right side ? any trouble shoot suggestions? my left side is running pretty hot and its getting hot fast!
( this is with a fully charged battery btw)

Hi Tavarama,

How old is your battery? Sounds to me like you need a new battery. If it has sat dead for any time at all, they go bad quickly.

Also, you need to check your charging system. I believe there are threads on this forum. You need around 13.5 volts or better when running.

Again - LOW BATTERY WILL AFFECT STARTING AND RUNNING. Get that fixed first before you worry about starter issues or spark issues.
