LEAN MACHINE

Post by 1966edward305 » Tue Nov 21, 2006 1:33 pm

HEY RANDALL, THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY, BUT I OWE YOU AN APPOLOGY. I DID'NT EVEN THINK TO MENTION, I HAVE INSTALLED ON THE BIKE ELECTRONIC IGNITION. NO POINTS OR CONDENSER ON THE BIKE. STARTS FIRST KICK EVERY TIME, EVEN WHEN COLD (GARAGE TEMP). I GUESS THAT MEANS CAMSHAFT ATTENTION HUH !!!!!!! WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO THE ADVANCE MECHANISM? OTHER THAN TIME, WHAT COULD DAMAGE THE ADVANCE MECHANISM?

The advance mechanism usually begins to exhibit wear after 10-15K miles on the bike. One or both springs lose tension, and the centrifugal weights develop wear in their pivot points and advance slots, leading to erratic changes in the advance curve. If you know someone with access to an ignition analyzer, this could be diagnosed without tearing into the engine. Last time I checked, the parts to rebuild the advance unit were still available. --Randall

Unfortunatly Honda hasn't had the cam advance aprings for years.
Check valves at .004.
Check point of ignition at rotor with a timing light.
Move (adjust) exiter if not correct.
Change needles to CB77 issue and put clip in next from bottom slot.
Also change slow jet to #42 same as CB77 engines.
#35 jet should be Ok for your engine.
Make sure gas cap isn't causing tank to Vacuum Lock at top speed. (open cap when engine faulters) ............lm

LEAN UP-DATE

Post by 1966edward305 » Thu Nov 23, 2006 1:18 pm

HEY RANDALL AND LOUDMOUSE, THANKS TO BOTH OF YOU. RANDALL, AS FAR AS I CAN TELL, THE BIKE ONLY HAS 2200 MILES ON IT AND I BELIEVE THIS BECAUSE OF THE CONDITION OF THE BIKE OVERALL. HOWEVER, I WILL SEARCH OUT THE IGNITION ANALYSER. LOUDMOUSE, I'M CONFUSED, WHY AM I PUTTING CB PARTS IN A CL CARB ? GAS CAP IS NEW OLD STOCK BUT I WILL CHECK ON THE VACUUM. ALSO, VALVES ARE OK..AND I THINK THE TIMING IS OK BUT WILL RE-CHECK. I THINK THE PROBLEM IS IN THE CARBS. JUST HAVING A TOUGH TIME WITH THEM. IF YOU GUYS STICK WITH ME, I WILL DO AS YOU SAY. WISH ME LUCK AND WATCH FOR MY UP-DATES.............. THANKS EDDIE...........

The reason I use the CB carb parts is they richen the fuel sooner than the CL parts do.
I've been useing them for about 5 years now and have solved the lean condition when cold that causes the CL to cough OFF BOTTOM so bad.
I rebuild about 10 carb sets a year for others and CB oe CL the owners are always pleased. .........lm

Those are all great suggestions. Western Hills Honda still lists the advance springs (14329-268-320), but they show an inventory quantity of 1! Perhaps they can obtain more. --Randall
