Interesting rear heat shield

Post by Snakeoil » Tue Apr 19, 2011 3:31 pm

I picked up a set of heat shields from a new found friend for my CL77. I actually bought the straight pipes from him last year and decided I wanted the correct heat shields for it as well. He had two styles of rear heat shields, one of which I'd never seen before.

One is the early CL77 style that I'm familiar with which has two mounting screw holes and stops just ahead of the rear exhaust mounting bolt that screws into a boss on the frame. The other was a longer shield, still a two mounting hole design, but extended past the exhaust mounting bolt and had a hole to access that bolt. The exhaust mounting bolt access hole was a little butchered, so not sure if was homemade or just abused.

At first I thought this was a late model rear heat shield for the welded muffler system, similar to what I have on my '67CL77 exhaust when he described it on the phone. That shield goes all the way to the start of the muffler and has three mounting screws. This one only extended a couple or 3 inches behind the exhaust mounting bolt and had two mounting screws. I thought that perhaps someone had cut off a longer late model design, but there was remnants of chrome on the edge that would have been cut so it came that way from Honda.

Parts book only shows two styles of B heat shields, the early short and the late long versions. Has anyone ever seen this intermediate length rear heat shield. I'm thinking it might have been a transistion from the short to the long and was put on some bikes but never offered as a spare part.

I compared it to the short version when I was there and they are identical with regards to mounting screw locations, louver placement, etc. Just one is longer and has the bolt hole accesss hole.

Might be a rare piece he has there.

Thanks,
Rob

Sorry, no pics, LM.

But... Rocket Ron, if you are reading this, you might want to snap a pic of that long heat shield and post it here. I'm curious if it is a unique piece.

regards,
Rob
