Good morning from Slower Delaware

Post by honda twin » Sat Mar 26, 2011 9:19 am

MY name is Kevin and have had bikes since I was 15 yrs old. Not ready to give my age right now...ha ha...but I have had a CL77 for about 10 yrs now and pulled it a part to restore it and that is about as far as I have gotten. Old story , I know , but am ready to build her back to operating status. Harleys have always been a passion and have built a few of those and Honda singles also. Gotta tell you a Cl77 or CL72 in pristine shape makes me salivate. Love em. Hope to make some new friends here and learn something since I am not a technician in any way , shape or form . I just like to tinker and improve my own skills and knowledge. No pics right now , but will maybe start a build thread soon.
Have seem some beauty bikes already on this forum.....Kev.

Wecome to the zoo, Kevin. Your HD background must be where you get the term "technician". That's what HD shops have now. They just replace parts until it works again. All the HD "mechanics" own their own shops. ;-)

A good bunch here. Might get your stones busted once in awhile. But plenty of folks willing to help with problems.

regards,
Rob

Hi Kevin,

Sounds like you and I have a lot in common. I bought a 1966 CL77 from a guy in Laurel over ten years ago and just started putting it back together last week.

When I bought it the engine was out of the frame and was seized. I asked the guy for how long and he walked behind the bike, looked at the license plate and said "since 1978." Had one hell of a time getting the pistons out, but it is now rebuilt and back in the frame. It has been a bit of a pain trying to find all the parts after moving three times. At least I am getting rid of boxes that have cluttered the garage since building it three years ago. Maybe in another month I can have a cleared floor!

Let me know if you need parts as I have some spares and another rolling chassis.

My first bike bought new in June 1968. Had my license suspended for a week for engaging in a speed contest so I used the down time to have the fenders chromed.

Here is the restoration in progress. Not a show piece, but it should look OK when finished.

Hey Tom...looks like you are way farther along than I am. I am still disecting and placeing small parts in bags. Cleaning and degreasing big parts . Looks like I may need a second income to support this build. I see the rolling chassis in the background of your pic. Good lookin bike so far as I can tell. This weekend should be a good weekend for me to get a lot done. Working today but tommorrow is all mine. Maybe we could hookup somewhere and talk CL's.....depending on where you are. Looking forward to this build and web help...I will surely need some...Kev.

Welcome Kevin, my story sounds the same. Bought my cl77 6 years ago and just started 2 yrs ago restoring mine. I should have mine finished by the end of the month. The only thing I need is a front fender and stay in real good shape. Tom, if you have a fender that you'll sell I'm interested!!!

Thanks David...seems there are many more of these bikes out there than I ever realised. My friend found one about a month ago in a shed. He asked some dude standing out in his yard if he knew of any old motorcycles in the area, and the guy called his friend and they went and looked it over. Either a 65 0r 66 CL77. Rough , but all there. I have driven by that shed a thousand times.....WHO KNEW? Hope to talk to you all some more soon....I want my CL running....but i have a ways to go...Kev.
