Speedo drive unit is different, not the cable. You can change to an early drive unit, and use the early speedo. Do a serch for speedometer rebuild, there are some great ideas out there.

Hi Davo, I've encountered different speedometer cables (cables, not housings) for the early vs. late speedo drives that have the wire bundles twisted in opposite directions (think left-hand pitch bolts as compared to right-hand pitch). It is best to have the driven end try to tighten the wires, rather than "unscrew" them, causing expansion of the cable O.D. This can result in the cable locking up in the housing, erratic speedo needle motion, and a really annoying noise. Fought this for quite a while on my '66 CB77. Regards, Chase

That's a great point, Chase and something most of us would not bother to check if we bought a new cable. With all the aftermarket stuff being made in China by prisoners, this is a good check to do on any new speedo cable on any bike, old or new.

Thanks and regards,
Rob

Chase,

Good point! I'll have to look at a few of mine, and see if there's any difference.
