fun fun fun! so much gunk!

I replaced all and trying to get it back together ...

note to self and others who may be upside-down at the moment: "put the locator pin in the shaft at the 12:00 position" ... uh huh. If you happen to be working on the engine upside-down (as I am), please remember to either stand on your head or rotate your watch so that it's 6:00 not 12:00 ;)

On a serious note: After all is together, the locator pin is correct, and shaft is seated in the case as far as it will go (it looks to be perpendicular to the plane of the gasket surface), I can't get the (circular) oil filter cover on after the case is on. It seems that the end of the shaft is not in position to slide into the forged receiving boss on the inside of the case. I've wiggled the shaft, but the available side-to-side slack is no more than 10/1000ths ... it's pretty darn snug. I can slip the oil filter cover (minus the o-rings) on the shaft without the case in place, but that's all I can do.

Where's my hammer?

I'm not sure if I understand what you are saying, so I'll go down two roads here.

If you are talking about the cap that covers the oil filter rotor and makes it a closed vessel, that cover should be installed with the filter rotor on the bench. A little oil or STP along with some help from your finger nails or a plastic spatula willl persuade the cap into place so you can install the snap ring.

If you are talking about actual oil filter cover, you need to line up the anti-rotation pin with the slot in the cover. I see that you have the pin set at 12 o'clock. I thought 11 o'clock was the preferred position. It's pretty easy to look at the position of the cutout for the pin and lining the pin up with the cover so it enters the cutout. If the cover goes on without the o-rings and seats flush and gives you trouble with the o-ring and you are sure that the pin is aligned with the cutout, then I would say that you just have to lube the o-ring and give it a nudge with your fist or a rubber hammer.

Thanks snakoil. I'm talking about the final 3-screw oil filter cover that goes on last. As I mentioned the shaft pin is positioned correctly (the 12 o-clock position).

I believe the shaft is ever so slightly off center.

I'm going to try some machinist's blue dye and lightly tap tap to see where the shaft is hitting the inside of the oil filter cover.

Ya can actually grind a slight tapper on that end and add a little oil/grease to the "O" ring area, position the cover and smack it with the palm of your hand. ............lm

I went back and re-read your post. I think you are saying that the cover will slip over the shaft without the side case cover in place. But with the side case cover in place, it won't.

I'm actually tempted to go to the shop and pull the filter cover off my engine. You've got my curiosity going here.

Is it not possible to pull the shaft out of the engine case a bit, engage it in the cover and then slip the cover into the side case? For some reason this is how I thought I put it back together. I put the shaft in the cover, slipped the thrust washer on, then the filter. Then put the chain over the sprocket and carefully slipped the shaft into the bore in the engine and then slid everything home.

I'm new to these so here's a question that could be dumb or a possibility. Are all the filter shafts for the engines (CA,CB and CL) the same length? Is it possible that LM sent a shaft that is too long for your engine? Just a thought. Sometimes the most obvious problems are the hardest to see.... at least for me.

The shafts were/are all the same.
Where do I send a wrong shaft????????????????. ...........lm

Thanks LM. Hey snake ... the shafts are the same (I actually got the shaft from Fast Fred ... d'oh! ... jk FF)

I pulled out the shaft a tad ... wiggled it around and then was able to dry fit all the parts with a rubber mallet.

Unfortunately I scratched up the red paint on the little filter cover in the process (OMG! red! ... 'cuz I can and 'cuz the cover is scraped up a bit anyway).

I'm not gonna grind right now ... just leave it alone and hope it doesn't move before I bolt it all back. I think the mallet whacking centered the shaft by itself.
