Dana, two nuts tightened against each other make an excellent stud remover! Clean up the burrs on the fliter and case, and run it! Say hi to fast Fred for me!

But what about the excessive wear and heat?? DID the PO run it while low on oil? Should I just clean it up and move on?
I think LM is saying that in the photo it looks like we are seeing the washer in place on the shaft - or is that an optical illusion?

Missing tooth

Post by conbs » Sat Jan 22, 2011 12:20 pm

1. So, if your seals were good enough to keep all (or even most) of the oil inside the cases, how in the heck did the tooth jump outside and end up in the side case?????

2. Are you sure the threads of the 2 studs are not just full of metal or crud? I can't tell from the picture, but they look like they might still be alright under whatever is on them. It might do to run a die down the threads to see if they clean up.

There are limber holes between the inner crankcase and the clutch cover area to allow the oil to share & circulate.

Hey all (fun thread),

I flat-filed the damage from the rotor end and cleaned it all up ... maybe something got wedged in there to cause the damage. Moving on :)

The last 3/4" of each of the 2 studs are bent outboard about 5-ish degrees. A die won't go past the bend (tried). Tried the double-nut method (after whacking off the bent end). It ain't working and I'm afraid of stretching and stripping out the remaining usable threads.

YAY!! I get to go buy another tool .. off to Harbor Freight to buy a stud remover and some media for my blaster. Might as well clean it all up now that it's apart ... more scope creep.

Davomoto: I'll say hi to FF. We had lunch yesterday. OMG! His bike is superb!

Thanks all for the great advice. Time to go spend money.

Get a big bag of baking soda to clean your parts. Much safer. Soak in vinegar when you are done and all the soda goes away. Don't use sand or glass beads unless you want to stay up at night worrying that you got it all out.

Tooth in side case.

Okay, I feel a little dumb. No, a lot dumb. Was reading "left" but thinking "right" side case when asking how the tooth jumped out. Doh!

Snakeoil, will baking soda work in a regular cabinet or tank blaster? Eastwood, Harbor Freight, etc. sell soda blasters that seem to have a different feed and pressure regulation for the media. Not really needed?
