ok thanks guys.

Off to find a cool glass of fermented grape juice / liquid motivation.

I've just redefined the term "scope creep" (Project Management speak).

I'll take a peek behind the oil pump.

No matter if ya do or don't see the broken gear ya will need to replace it.
Ya can take a good look and see how oil passes from all the parts in the cases including the clutch side. .....lm

Good news is you don't have to remove the top end to do it! Flip the engine over and seperate the bottom case from the top. I recommend all new seals while you're in there.

Thanks mucho Dave! I was wondering if I needed to work my way down. Knowing me I woulda wanted to freshen the head, pistons, rings, blah blah.

Definitely new seals and gaskets. I'm pretty religious about that.

Onward :)

Oooo! Piece of cake dropping the engine. I love the stressed frame member configuration ... no muscling the engine around a freshly painted cradle :)

I'll get 'er up on my bench and crack it open in the next few days (or minutes ... lol), and take pics.

unothodox repair technique! you be the judge--

I worked at a Honda shop when these bikes were new, (we had cb77's in crates) I had to do a trans repair. I took a good look and figured that I would save time if I flipped the bike over. Spoke to the shop manager, boss and convinced them that it would work. These guys we ace mechanics and very tolerant. Popped the tank, drained the bowls, drained the oil, pulled the battery, mufflers and got to it. Luckily the the cases split easily and the job proceeded as envisioned-- no problems! Did I save time? Can't remember, but we all had a chuckle.

We have had to do a few repairs that way after Saturday's races and before Sunday tech inspection.

It goes something like this:
Drain oil and fuel
Motor out
Remove side covers
Remove clutch and gear change etc
Flip upside down on bench
Remove lower crankcase
R&R gear shafts
Clean both crank halves (this is the longest part)
Reassemble
