Mixed front forks?

Post by 56_oval » Fri Jan 14, 2011 11:04 pm

I finally got my forks apart and realized that I have a mix of type 1 and type 2 forks. The outers have the threaded seal holder and from what I can tell steel tubes which match the Western Hills diagram type 1. The inners on the other hand match up to the diagram as being type 2. All the bushings are held on with snap rings instead of the pins that I have seen others talk about. There are a total of three rings.
My question on this is, will I have any issues with this combination? Or was this indeed a factory transition from type 1 to type 2?
I'll try and post some pics soon so you guys can see what I'm talking about.

Only the early bikes had the pins, through 62, maybe early 63. All of the 64s I have taken apart had the snap rings. Pics are always helpful.

That makes sense. I was just going by the diagrams. I am glad though, I've heard that the early forks are a bitch to get apart.
