Piston rings

Post by arseatea » Wed Dec 29, 2010 10:21 pm

Hey guys. I have a 1967 CBE77 that I'm getting ready to install new rings. According to the Clymer manual that I have, the new rings should have a manufactures mark on the top side. Only one pair have a small "N" marked. The other set appears to have a very small offset. I am pretty sure that the rings with the offset are the top rings, with the offset to be installed at the top, the second rings are those marked with "N" and the oil rings can go on either way. Is this correct? Just want to make sure before I put this puppy together. Thanks...Ron

Welcome to the Forum Ron.
Can't exactly answer your question with certainty, and I know your eager to get started, but if you do a search for say, "piston ring installation" you"ll more than likely find what your looking for.

Keep us posted on your progress.

The top ring is shiny on the outside. Get a good pair of reading glasses, or a magnifying glass, and find those letters/numbers.

Piston rings

Thanks for the replys. I did as you said, carefully squinted through a magnifing glass and you were right. The marks were there, even on the oil rings. Although some were very faint. But that gave me the topside of each ring. As I took the old rings off of piston #2, I inspected them carefully and found that the middle ring has an offset and it is on the bottom. That gave me the location of all rings. I installed them on the pistons after checking the end clearance. I should start putting this cb77 together tomorrow as it is supposed to be about 55 degrees and I have got cabin fever..Ron.
