Missing Washer between Oil Filter & Lower Crank Case?

Post by bpdinse » Sun Dec 19, 2010 2:42 pm

Is there supposed to be a washer between the Oil Filter and the Lower Crank Case on the Oil Filter Shaft? I have only the one washer on the outer end of the Oil Filter Shaft that goes up against the Shaft Stopper Pin. I am wondering if I misplaced another one that should go between the Lower Crank Case and the Oil Filter. It doesn't seem right that Aluminum should be riding against Aluminum...

I don't see one shown listed in the parts manual but I don;t know if that is because there isn't one or because it isn't considered a part of the Oil Filter assembly and may be covered somewhere else.

Thanks - I appreciate all the help I am getting! -Brian

Only one waher. It goes between the outer oil filter cover, and the pin in the shaft.

Thank you (again!), Davo. I already have the Left Cover on but it has been bugging me. I saw that thread on the chewed up Oil Filter end and couldn't tell if a washer was supposed to be there or not (there was one in that thread). I just knew mine didn't have one. I didn't want to be thinking about that Oil Filter getting eaten for lunch. I guess the two surfaces (Oil Filter and Lower Crank Case) don't ride against each other with much of any force. Best Regards, Brian

I used to get this wrong, until lm put me straight (like, TWICE!); but does it not go between the spinner and the pin, so that the pin can engage in the cover, davo? I know what you meant, but it reads a bit ambiguously.

I put mine back on the inside of the spinner; that was my usual transgression. No damage, luckily!

Hope you're well, mate.

Thanks for the clarification. I did happen to know the relative position of the Rotor Cap -> Washer -> Oil Filter Shaft Stopper Pin as I had left that one washer on the Oil Filter Shaft (with pin in) with the shaft through the Oil Filter.

Speaking of the pin engaging the cover, I had the experience of not being able to get the side cover back on all the way. Of course, it turned out that the pin on the Oil Filter Shaft was not aligned correctly and wasn’t fitting into the cut-out on the inside of the Oil Filter Cover. …one of those things that may cause a new person (like me) to scratch their head, perhaps once.

If you don't have one, go download the CB77 service and parts manuals from Rivet Restorations website.

regards,
Rob
