CL77 chain guardCL77 chain guardSo I just noticed that in my CL77 parts book, only one part number is listed for the chain guard. 40510-273-010Z This seems odd because I know that the '65 version had louvers on the side, but 66 and later did not. How can they be the same part number? If you got one from Honda with that number what part would you actually get.
I also found it a little confusing (not that it takes much for me) that the "273" in the part number is the product code for a CL72. I don't have a parts book for the 250, but I understand the correct chain guard for it is the one with louvers on the side and two vents on top. Maybe it doesn't make much difference becaue you can tell the differences among them by looking at the part, but it just seemed odd to me. Anybody have an explanation? I think that it depends upon the date of your parts book and the status of those bikes / parts at the time of printing. My CL72 book, printed Nov '66 shows two numbers:
40510-273-000Z and 40510-273-010Z My CL77 Manual, Printed 1969 shows just one number 40510-273-010Z I believe that there were two CL72 type chain guards, one with and one without the two little vents at the back. Whether they were covered by the same number "000Z' is a mystery to me. I would have expected the CL77 type with no louvers to carry the suffix 020. Honda always cascaded numbers from earlier bikes to later ones. As the CL77 was made up mainly from parts from the earlier CL72 most of the parts carry the center code for the 250 (273). Anything specific to the CL77 would have the CL77 model code (278) You will also find parts fin the CL77 list from other Hondas in there such as CB72 (268) and C72 (259) G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72
'61 CB72 '64 CB77 '65 CB160 '66 Matchless 350 '67 CL77 '67 S90 '77 CB400F
Three actual designs.
CL72 All-- louvers/2 rear vents CL77 1965 (small brake) louvers CL77 1966/67 (large brake) solid. ............lm
Ya have picked only one of the many HONDA parts which the parts book/fiche don't show all the issue numbers.
Look at other part numbers and ya will see only the last issue number. I suppose it was easy to just show the last as time went by. Also HONDA changed some parts and didn't show a number change. .............lm
Hmmm. Thanks for the explanation guys, but G-man added a little more confusion (not that it takes much for me).
Are there 4 different versions of the chain guard (2 for CL77 and 2 for CL72)? G-man has two different part numbers shown in his CL72 parts book which would seem to mean there were (at least) 2 different versions of the CL72 chain guard. I had thought there was only the one Ed described for the 250 - louvers with two vents on top.
Re: Hmmm. The CL72 used the same design on all bikes.
Ya must keep in mind that if ya see another parts number that doesn't mean the part had major changes. HONDA merely had more made and that's where another number will come in. ............lm
