I am at a loss, I thought it was low compression but

Ok, well since I have taken that cover off I suppose I will need to stake those screws again. However, what are the chances of losing magnetism on the rotor?

If you completely remove the stator and place it around the rotor whilst you do the violent bit it will act as a keeper ring.

Place both items on a piece of sheet timber (plywood works OK) but work on a concrete base as a datum; staking on a bench, other than directly over a vertical (leg) which is firmly at datum level, is a no-no, as the bench top will just 'give' with the impact and create the need to belt it harder.
