CL77 ignition switch trim ring

Post by Snakeoil » Mon Nov 15, 2010 11:15 am

The ignition trim ring, officially called the "ratchet, right air cleaner cover" on my '67 CL77 is brass. There are no grooves cut in it to grip and it almost looks to be homemade. I have seen black plastic rings with grooves as well as chrome plated rings with grooves.

Is any one ring style correct? Did they ever use a plain brass ring like I have on my bike? I'm thinking of machining some grooves to facilitate a better grip and then giving it a good polish. Might even nickel plate it with an old brush plating kit I have.

Have not been able to locate a NOS one.

Thanks,
Rob

Rob,
I believe the plastic coated one would be correct. I once bought a parts bike with a steering yoke nut used for that switch ring so perhaps someone used an axle retainer nut for that purpose. Someone here may very well be able to help you out. Rusty

I think the genuine article is black anodised aluminum but I have tried to buy them from two different places under the part number 17251-273-000 and they were both too small. i.e. the internal thread was the wrong size.

Both David Silver and CMS can supply but I am wary as CMS supplied the wrong one.....

Tis possible ya will find that the set/lock nut for the CB72/77 switch will have the same thread for the early type.
Both early and late have a threaded aluminum center with the outer being a hard black plastic sort of material.
HONDA made a repop of the 1966/67 threaded part which using 2 screws holds the switch in place and changed the threads so no matter which plastic one ya have ya can't use it. .......lm

Interesting. I initially thought I had a spare because I have a spare switch for an S90. But it is just a hair smaller than my CL77 switch.

Guess there might be a market for these. Wish I had metric gears for my lathe to cut metric threads.

Whattaya figure, $200 a piece? Heh, heh, heh... Kool-Aid for $5.00/glass.

regards,

Rob

Latch Size Matters

Post by FAST FRED » Mon Nov 15, 2010 6:06 pm

[/b]I bought a bunch of these latches from different Honda dealers here in the States. The early smaller ones are 23mm ID and the later larger ones measure 25mm ID. The plastic outside rings tends to crack with age. I have seen lots of new ones with cracks and I believe its cause by the plastic shrinking with age. After cracking they still work fine they just don't look as good. .
