Tiefelziege no longer owns the bike, I bought it from him. I haven't taken the steering head off, so I don't know what he did to resolve the issue. If I tear into that area I will update if I can see what he did.

I was contacted by Tiefelziege recently and here's what he had to say on the issue;

"I tried to switch from ball bearings to tapered sealed style and I couldn't get the spacing/geometry right. I couldn't get the right answer, so I ended up just buying new ball bearings for the original races. It wasn't as slick, but it was much better afterwards."

I'm sure it doesn't help, but at least we know what happened.

For which model? The CB77 uses 20 on the bottom, 19 on the top.

The old advice here if you didn't know the exact number was:

1. Grease the cup.
2. Fill it up with balls until you cannot fit any more.
3. Take one ball out......

With all respect to Davo, any CB77 I've encountered has 19 balls on the bottom race, and 18 on the top race. Yes, the parts book says 38 total, but the races are different diameters, therefore the odd number total. Now I'll just await the onslaught of comments that CA folks have more balls........ Chase
