Starter planetary gear grease?

Post by Jethro » Mon Nov 01, 2010 10:10 pm

Hi I wasn't sure where to post this but here goes. I just pulled the starter drive sprocket end off of my starter so I could clean it and prep for paint. When I pulled it off, I noticed the grease inside the planetray gearing was pretty dried up and thick. Does anyone know what type of grease is best used in this application? Jethro.

So I found some stuff laying around the shop. MIL-G-21164C. About the same color, consistency, and smell. Only clean! I looked up some info on it and I think it will suit my starter fine. I suppose the gear grease in the starter should be relatively thick due to the stresses with those gears. Any thoughts? Anything better out there?
