Yup, I saw where you were going, Ed. The whole thing about the noise being "from the area of the filter spinner" threw me at the outset, but started to gel when the loose st-clutch screw became apparent. Still might not be the whole story, but I'd lay a small bet that it actually is.

Has anyone encountered this problem -- where the starter motor becomes inadvertently bound to the crank?

e3steve, LM, anyone, please enlighten me: what other parts might there be to the story? I don't want to leave any stone unturned here.

Teazer what struck me about that white valve is that the valves I see in the other crusty heads I have are all carbonized. I looked elsewhere on automotive and motorcycle forums and it seems that light colored exhaust valves are common in some engines. However, from my own limited experience, I don't think it's the case for 305 motors.

I've read several topics where the screws have backed out, that's all I can add really. The starter gearbox isn't wrecked, the chain is intact (otherwise you'd have stated otherwise); all that's left to test is the motor itself, and that should be just fine.

I reckon you have little to worry over. If you need a starter sprocket, I have one somewhere. If yours isn't running true it'll show by scraping on the crankcases or on the little retainer. It may just cause an oil leak from not running properly on the lip seals if it's badly distorted, but that's unlikely and it's a piece of piss to change, even when to bike's fully re-assembled.

Don't panic (Mr Mainwaring! -- Dad's Army). These little bikes are as hard as nails, mate.

Yes Steve, I've found them to be finicky and idiosyncratic, but at the same time, oddly resilient to and forgiving of my hamfistedness.
