Ticking noise (it's da bomb!)

Post by Hotshoe » Thu Oct 21, 2010 10:00 pm

Question for the smart guys.....
Just finished the top end of my 67 Cl77 - honed cyls, 1st over rings and CA77 pistons (thanks Ed), lapped valves, ported head, bit of polishing while waiting for parts etc.
It all went together well and I had a good time doing it but when I was turning the engine over with a 14mm wrench on the dyno rotor bolt to check things out (no hammering I promise) I heard a faint ticking/clicking noise coming from the clutch area.
Since I got myself into this mess by ignoring a noise I couldn't ID, I went ahead and pulled the primary cover and other than no thrust washer on the oil filter shaft, didn't find anything wrong but the ticking noise is still there coming from somewhere behind the clutch inside the trans I think.
Whatever it is ticks 12 times in one complete revolution of the clutch and doesn't tick when rotated backwards.
I'm guessing it's something to do with the kickstarter pawl but it's a new noise and I've learned to be wary.
It was shifting OK when I broke the cam chain and has all four gears now..... any ideas or guidance on the significance of this noise?
Thanks, CW

Q. IS teh right engine cover in place to rotate the kickstarter shaft against the stop?

If not, it's the pawl clicking. Rotate the kickstart shaft coming out of the crankcase in an anti-clockwise direction until it hits the stop and see if the noise goes.

Hi,

Is it possible that the dogs are "touching" each other, in a not engaging position ?
I encountered this issue once, while I was shimming the transmission too precise (yes that can happen too).

Another good shout from The Man from The Land of The Tolerant.

Just a thought: if past Prime Ministers of England and their respective cabinets had partaken in smokin' da ganja (whilst in office), would the UK be in quite as terrible a social & financial state as it currently is?

With engine right side up ya will need to rotate the KS shaft clockwise and the pawl will no longer click. ..........lm

Hi Steve,

Two years ago I spend my summer holiday in the UK, I think the English are too nice to each other.
They stand in a row and wait for their turn (honestly they do), no matter for what reason, without wondering why they are standing in a row. They don't throw their car before my car on a roundabout, and if the roundabout is having two lanes, they never take the inside lane when doing a half roundabout, even in a traffic jam !!

Like I said, way too nice, I don't know if that will change when starting to smoke grass.
