I need help!!!

Post by youngpup305 » Sun Aug 13, 2006 10:20 pm

Hi everyone,
I didn't even know what a 305 was until recently when I enherited my old man's Scrambler. Now, at 23 yrs. old, I definately have the bug! I'm not new to riding or to the mechanical side of bikes, but I don't have the first clue about vintage motorcycles. My dad doesn't remember what year the bike is and I don't have a clue how to find out. If anyone knows how I can find out for sure please let me know. The bike is in really ruff shape but I'm gonna give it a go to restore it anyway. It went through a flood it '77 and has been sitting ever since. All things considered, it doesn't have THAT much rust. The frame and engine are still in decent shape, but alot of other parts will have to be replaced. I don't have the slightes clue where to get parts or even where to start. Any tips or tricks would be grately appreciated. Being as young as I am, I'm on a kind of tight budget. Although, I do realize something like this isn't cheap. I don't mind a little penny pinching here and there to get the parts I need, and I don't mind getting the less than perfect parts and making them work. So far, I know I need a seat, tank and battery, since I got mine without them. The fenders are pretty much trash too. If anyone knows where I might get decent parts at a reasonable price please let me know. Thanks.

young pup,

Your best source for the parts you described would b E-bay, unfortunately the parts you described are some of the harder ones to find. Of course there are the usual places such as Ohio Cycle http://www.ohiocycle.com and retro bikes http://www.olypen.com/retro/ there is a parts wanted post here in this forum and some of the folks here should be able to help. Perhaps you could search out local boneyards in your area and find yourself a somewhat complete parts bike and save some big money.

As a new CL77 owner I am finding that patience is key to obtaining the things you need so don't give up and be sure to check the forum here if you have any specific questions during the resto process. good luck!

Thanks alot, I appreciate the info. I've checked with most of the bike salvages here in town and pretty much all of them gave me the same reply. "Wow......good luck with that." Which is half way what I expected. I'll just have to be patient and see what I can come up with down the road. The only problem with e-bay is that they only have the stuff you need, when you don't have the cash to get it...haha, but I guess that's life. Anyhow thanks again for the advice.

Does anyone know how to identify the model year of a CL77 if you don't have a title? I found inf that told me to look for a tag tied to wiring harness just behind the fuel tank. Well, I found the tag but I guess 30 years in a back yard can make a sticker crumble.....go figure. Anyhow, I don't have a clue what year it is and don't want to buy the wrong parts....if anyone can help I would appreciate the info. If pictures would help I have plenty, and can take more if needed.
