I had a similar thing happen last weekend.

LM:
Just a couple of ideas
It may be something came loose in the clutch area and jamming things in there.
Ya may want to check the starter assy. behind the rotor.
Ya say it had a "squeaking" sound and that may have been one or more of the screws loose and jamming the starter sprocket.
Also see if ya can turn the bolt at the rotor counterclockwise to see if it will loosen and allow ya to check things. ..........lm

I turned the rotor anticlockwise and it did unlock but is still hard to turn. I sort of have to turn it a little, wait a second, turn a little more, etc. I put my ear to it and can now tell the squeaking is coming from the starter motor. Thanks LM

here is an update on my situation posted Oct. 10th. I have tried turning the rotor c-c-wise with no success. I have removed the oil filter and found, the beginning i suppose, of my problem. Where the oil filter shaft meets the crankcase there is an area on the c-case that is "built up" in order to hold the shaft in place. Approx 1/2 of that "built-up" area is missing. the area where this is missing is black so I'm assuming there was a problem sometime back and this piece was somehow attached but has now become unattached. I am removing the c-c-cover in search of the missing piece but have run into 2 screws that are gouged-out (any ideas?). I will keep you all posted through the winter as i am sure this will become a project that will consume many months. Thanks to All.

I suspect the screws came from the shift drum keeper as the other threaded parts are bolts. .............lm

L M i have taken some digital pictures and am now going to try to figure out how to post them. the screws you mentioned are in the shifter area (how did u know that?) but the other 6 screws i removed from the c-case cover were phillips head.
