Rear shock disassembly

Post by rbaselt » Fri Oct 01, 2010 8:28 am

I took these rear shocks apart for rechroming, and am wondering whether it is possible to remove the plunger shaft from the body (see photo below). Would I drill out the staked spots and then unscrew the metal ring by means of the two slots? Thanks,
Randall

One person said to drill out the staked spots, unscrew the slotted ring and pull out the plunger. Well, pulling out that plunger was a challenge. I had to rig up a tension device using a come-along between two 4 x 4 deck posts with the shock held by nylon ropes. Using an estimated 100 lbs of pull, that shock came apart with a pop and it sprayed black oil everywhere, despite having a catch basin underneath. Here's a photo of the internals:

looks like you are missing the rubber "rear cushion stopper" on your shock
