Kickstarter Problem! Need help!

Post by derekephillips » Wed Sep 29, 2010 2:49 pm

I just recently obtained this bike (1965 CL77) this is my first bike. I'm a newbie when it comes to working on bikes. The problem I have is I went to kickstart it today and the engine turned over but the kickstarter made a funny pop sound on the way down and then stuck that way in the down position. I pulled the L/crankcase cover and checked the spindle on the Kickstarter and the teeth on the crankcase cover. They all appeared to be fine, no signs of stripping. I put it back together and tried it again it kicked over two times and then on the third kick it did the same thing and stuck in the down position. Clueless as what could be wrong?
Any help would be appreciated! I have not had any problems with the kickstarter in the past three months I've had the bike. It has 19000 miles.

Thanks for any info!

It sounds like the gear is slipping on the splines. You said you removed the cover, checked all, re=installed it, and it was fine for 2 kicks. I'd be looking there for an answer, post pics of the shaft and gear if you can. BTW R/ crancase cover. R and L as you are seated on the bike.

I had the same thing happen on my CL72 flat track bike a couple of weeks ago.
The female spline looked good without any wear but it had a crack running the length.
This allowed the assembly to slip when you kicked it down. Not every time---- just when you wanted to start the bike.
I see that you are in Atlanta. If that looks to be the problem and your going to the vintage meet at Barber next weekend let me know. I'll swap you a good one for your cracked one. One of these days, when I get time, I'm gonna repair a batch of bad ones (weld the crack and turn the OD).

Thanks for the reply flathead and dave. I pulled it off again and found that it did have a crack I didn't see due to the grease. Flathead I regret that I won't be able to attend the meet at Barber. I have posted a pic of the crack, it's pretty bad, don't know how I missed it. But thanks a lot for the insight.
Flathead would you be willing to trade or sell the part and I will ship you my old one. Also you wouldn't happen to have the Spring #28333-250-000 and the Bolt Clip #28293-250-000 Seeing has I broke the clip and lost the spring, LOL Live and learn I guess. Just let me know. Thanks for all your help Guys!
