Steve, yes, of course you are correct. If the ball is missing the overall length is off by that amount. I would think that somebody would have moved the adjuster to compensate, but then again, if they left the ball out, chances are they would never think to adjust for it.

WR, referencing your pictures, in the opposite end than that shown of the clutch lifter, there should be a single steel ball. It can stick in there from grease. If it is not in there, you need to get one.

Referencing your clutch rod pictures. The rod looks to be the correct rod. The rounded end is right and what everyone has been calling the square end (and confusing you) is the flat end shown with the small dimple in the middle. The dimple is from riding on that steel ball. Everyone was calling that end square because the flat end makes a 90 degree angle with the axis of the rod. There is no "square" machined anywhere on the rod. When two surfaces join at 90 degrees, they are said to be square to each other and over time the standard term has become simply "square".

Regarding the condition of the tranny, I'll leave commenting on that to the experts who have spent some time with these engines. Nothing jumped out at me that can be fixed with some emery or crocus cloth and a little elbow grease. That seal is butt ugly, that's for sure. Oh, I did see the spring and the pin for the kick start pawl, but did not see the pawl itself. Did you lose it or was it not there? Did the kick starter work before? If so, then you dropped it somewhere. It is part 20 in the CB77 parts book.

One caution to you. Inside the 21 tooth gear on the counter shaft are 12 little rollers. That bushing that looks like a top hat hides them and if it slides down the shaft, you will dump the rollers all over the floor, if you haven't already. If you leave the seal on the shaft so it holds the bushing tight against the gear, you won't lose them until you are ready to remove them for inspection. In the CB77 parts book, the part numbers are 6 (gear) 1 (bushing) 25 (roller) and 27 (seal).

Hey Rob, thanks for lookin' over everything. There were a few things I took pictures of but didn't post (Felt like I was over doing the picture thing) I do have the ball and the pawl but they looked fine so I figured nobody needed to see pics of them. Funny you should mention the 12 little roller pins, they went everywhere... But I found them with some effort. Oh, and thanks for clearing up the "square" issue / confussion.

I guess the pieces I'm most concerned about is the hard surface of the kick start spindle (pg 67, item# 19, part # 28251-259-000); all the wear on kick start (Steel) metal bushing (pg 67, item #2, Part 28258-259-010); the scrapes and burn marks on the 29T 3rd gear (pg 67, item #10, part number 23451-268-010); the rust at the end of the 31T top gear and the in-layed copper piece inside 31T top gear (pg 67, item #12, part # 23451-268-030); and wear on the Gear Shift Forks (pg72, item # 2, part # 24211-268-000)

I guess those there the things that stood out to me. The rest of the pictures were there so others with more experience might look and see something that I might not notice. Of course there was the clutch lifter rod for clearities sake. And I added the Pawl Push Pin (pg 67, item # 22, part # 28256-250-000) because it was a little dinged up.
