leakin oil @ points 67 S-Hawk

Post by waynew » Sun Sep 05, 2010 3:07 pm

I have oil leaking from my contact breaker and I think i should replace the outward and inner gaskets and the small round oil seal (maybe my problem). My question is this: I will need to pull the point shaft to replace the oil seal and I'm wonderin if anything internally is attached or supported by/to the shaft that would cause me to have to go into the the engine? I am at best mechanically challenged so any basic help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Remove the points cover, points plate, and there will be 4 phillips head screws that hold the outer cover to the head. You can replace the gasket and seal by removing the cover. The seal can be replaced wothout removing the cover as well, but definately easier to do with the cover off. Nothing in the engine needs to come aprt, a very basic and simple repair.

And if you do not already have one, go to Harbor Freight, Pep Boys or even Sears and get yourself an impact driver to remove those Phillips head screws. Pick up a dead blow mallet while you are there as well and use that to strike the impact driver.

The Harbor Freight impact drives are only about 6 bucks and have both long and short Phillips bits. They work great. And that stuff is guaranteed for life so if you break a bit, just bring back the whole set and they'll give you a new one.

regards,

Rob
