I would not give up the ship yet. My guess is you can blend out the damaged area to remove any remaining cracks and run it. Experts I'm sure will confirm or deny this shortly. For a racing engine, this would probably mean replacing the case. But for a putt-putt around town, this case is probably still serviceable.

If you get a lower case, it would have to be remachined to mate properly with the upper case. Better to get a matching pair if you do replace the cases.

regards,
Rob

Whether or not ya use this case is your choice.
However if ya do replace it NO MACHINING is required. ................lm

No way I'm giving up, this engine will be rebuilt!!! I'm actually really proud of myself for getting this far. I think it takes a lot of nerve to pull an engine, to pull the jugs, to crack the case for your first time. And while others may have become frustrated by the stuck cylinders, exhausted by each and every stripped screw (the PO obviously had never heard of an inpact driver), exasperated by the broken shift drum plate and beaten by the broken case. These things only drive me forward. Smarter men then I may have given up, heck, it's only a CL... And they would be justified. But I am more excited now then when I started. Just look at all that I'm learning, all that I'll carry on to my next rebuild. Not to mention all the new friends I'm making.

But if I do have to buy a new case I hope I find out soon, there's one on ebay right now for less then $40 that ends in a couple hours. The rest seem to be about $90 before shipping. And while I realize that when this bike is done, I'll have spent twice it's worth (I started with a small set of ratches and a couple wrenchs and not so much as a drill) the money spent will justified as tuition, textbooks and supplies. I only wish I had discovered my love, passion, obsession for this earlier in life.

To quote the Victorian poet Henley, "My head is bloody'd but unbowed"

Thank you everyone for your help and patience.

Ok, I think this is what I'm going to do.

I'm going to bid on the new engine cases. If I win them, Great. If not, no loss. I'll work with the one I have, but the cracks are not the only issues I'll have to overcome with my current cases. There's also the issue of 5 broken screws, each brocken below the surface so they will have to be drilled out. 3 on the shifter sidecover side and 2 on the stator sidecover side. Whether or not I win the cases, I'll teach myself to remove the broken screws and I might even get to learn how to re-cut thread.

But if I don't try to get new cases, then I'll feel like I got this far and then half-a**ed it. Like I repaired or replaced everything that needed it except....

So, maybe no one else will bid on this case...

Do one of these look better then the other;

I'm guessing that's you that asked about the lower case screw holes in the $39 set, I'd ask specifically about damage since it's being sold as is.
Overall condition being similar, I'd go for the $39 set, the extra pieces with it may be salvagable/sellable.
If I can't use the lower cam chain roller off of my donor engine, I'll buy that from you if it's in good condition.
Does either engine case number match your frame number closer?

lower case

Joel,
I'll look through my ever growing parts store and I may be able to help you with a lower case if you don't get one off of ebay. The $40 one looks the best deal to me, for what it's worth.
BTW,,,,,,,,, I love your attitude with a willingness to learn and try, having not done this type of operation before. Well done !!!!!!! RW

Hotshoe,
My frame / engine numbers are right in between them. CL77E-10556XX & CL77-10558XX but as Loud Mouse said, I can use the lower half without having to use the top half so numbers shouldn't matter.

Regardless, if I don't need the lower cam chain roller and you do, then it's yours (if I get it, that is)

Rusty,
Thanks for your encouragement and help. So many times you've answered questions before I've asked (search button). If I don't happen to win the ebay for the case tonight (or if you happen to find a lower case before I bid tonight) I'd rather buy it from you. Let me know.

That said, as I'm waiting for parts and manuals to come in the mail, I feel that's all I can do with the engine right now. So I'm thinking about taking the frame apart. Start getting it ready for paint and chrome. It's in pretty rough shape. Lots of surface rust. So, I gotta go buy a wrench big enough to take the steering stem nut off. Is there a trick to it?

Joel

P.S. I didn't mean to steal your name, just a very happy coincidence.
